Ford vs. GMC Comparison Page

Pickup trucks are big business for American automakers, and Ford has been the sales king of this segment for decades. But the competition is far from having given up, and GM’s truck-focused GMC brand is one of Ford’s primary competitors. You might think that a brand made specifically to focus on trucks would have an advantage, but we’ve compiled a list of awards given out to Ford trucks by third parties, and this tells a very different story. The list shows why the Ford F-series has so dominated the truck market for so long.

Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards

Kelley Blue Book has been the leader in automotive resale value for almost as long as there have been automobiles. KBB’s estimates constitute the closest thing to an industry standard for used vehicle value as exists. The resale value projections are based on a number of things, and historical reliability is the primary criterion that is considered. Every year, KBB puts out awards for the vehicles that are deemed to be the “best buys” in a variety of categories. Resale value is obviously one of the top factors in this, but things like owner satisfaction are obviously important too. For the 2023 awards, Ford models took home four of these awards, more than any other single brand. One of these wasn’t for a truck, but the Expedition isn’t a crossover, and is built like a truck, with body-on-frame construction, so we’re including it. Not that we need to for Ford to come out on top, GMC won zero Best Buy awards, which is an easy number to beat. Here are the Ford trucks that won for 2023:

  • 2023 Ford Expedition
  • 2023 Ford Maverick
  • 2023 Ford F-150
  • 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

Edmunds Top Rated

Edmunds is a well-established outlet for automotive news and reviews, home to one of the most thorough ratings systems you’ll find in any automotive publication, with points awarded to a wide variety of areas, like performance, comfort, etc. Each year, these points are tallied up for the Top Rated Awards, where six different vehicles are given awards (plus one for top overall) according to the categories they fit into. Ford won two of these awards for 2023, with Top Rated Truck going to the F-150, and the Top Rated Electric Truck going to the F-150 Lightning. On top of that, the F-150 Lightning won the Best of the Best award. No other brand won more than one award, and GMC didn’t even get one.

MotorTrend Truck Of The Year

MotorTrend has been one of the leading automotive publications for many years, and the Car of the Year and Truck of the Year awards they give out are among the most sought-after by manufacturers. For 2023, the Ford F-150 Lightning took home the award. It was the first-ever electric truck to win, and it won by a unanimous vote of the judges. The chief reason given for this was the F-150 Lighting being so appealing to conventional truck buyers. No gimmicks or radical designs attempting to look futuristic, it’s the sort of truck that buyers already find appealing, just powered by electricity. This marks the tenth time that Ford has won the Truck of the Year award, and once again, it easily beats the zero times that GMC has won.

Car & Driver 10Best

The F-series gets a lot of awards, and with very good reason. But for people shopping for a smaller truck, this isn’t the most useful information. But there is good news, the Car & Driver 10Best awards for 2023 highlighted a couple of the smaller trucks that some people will find more practical. The Maverick and Bronco (not a pickup, but built on a truck frame) both took home awards, while no GMC models showed up on the list. In fact, in the 40 years that the 10Best awards have been around, no GMC model has ever won. But Ford’s two wins for 2023 make a total of 43 wins overall. Now, not all of those are for trucks, the Mustang has won a lot, and C&D didn’t split off a separate category for trucks until 2001. But it’s still important that Ford is one of the winningest brands in the history of these awards, not just more than GMC, but more than any GM brand.

Winner - Ford Trucks

It is incredibly clear, at the end of this list of awards, which manufacturer builds the superior trucks. GMC’s lineup is simply no match for the Built Ford Tough line of advanced and capable trucks that you’ll find at Ford. Whether you’re shopping for the best truck for towing, going offroad, or the most capable electric truck on the market, the answer is always Ford. And the best place to find that truck that’s right for you is Sarchione Ford of Alliance.
