About The Ford F-550

Ford trucks offer something for everyone, from offroad racers to work trucks to the towing-focused Super Duty line. But when you need something even more serious than that, something for a specialized purpose, you have the F-550. Sold by Ford as a chassis cab, but then generally sent to an upfitter for extra equipment, the F-550 is the platform that underpins a majority of the dump trucks, tow trucks, and bucket trucks you see every day. The F-550 is built to be endlessly customizable, so that you can get exactly the truck you need for your business. Much of this customization comes from upfitting, but Ford offers a number of options as well, including a choice of gasoline or diesel V8 and a choice of three cab configurations.

Ford F-550 Features

Seriously Capable

Chances are, if you need an F-550, it’s because you need to move around something heavy. That’s why the F-550 comes with a standard 7.3-liter big-block V8. It’s designed to be low maintenance and capable of idling for long periods of time without any risk of damage. It produces 335 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque, and can be pushed hard for as long as you need. For even heavier equipment, there is an available 6.7-liter diesel V8 option, which produces 330 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque. Both come with a TorqShift® 10-speed automatic with SelectShift®, and there is a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Exhaust braking is standard with the diesel, and a huge set of disc brakes can bring the F-550 to a stop repeatedly without risk of overheating. And of course, an integrated trailer brake controller comes standard.

Functional Interior

There are a lot of jobs that require many long hours sitting in a truck, and for those jobs, you want an interior that’s both comfortable and functional. The F-550 interior is unsurprisingly incredibly spacious, and available in Regular Cab, SuperCab, and Crew Cab. The Crew Cab is the biggest, with a total 131.8 cubic feet of passenger space. That kind of space comes in handy for those who need it to double as an office, as does the standard 5G Wi-Fi capability. Comfort is key as well, so there is available dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as remote start and a rapid-heat supplemental cab heater for diesel models. Built-in navigation is standard on some trims, and you can even opt for an 8-speaker B&O® Sound System by Bang & Olufsen with HD Radio™ to help you pass those long hours on the road. And when you’re away from your truck, you can keep your valuables safe with the Vehicle Safe by Console Vault.

Upfit Ready

Since the F-550 is sold by Ford in a chassis cab configuration, it is obviously intended to incorporate equipment from an upfitter. The high-strength steel frame is made to integrate seamlessly with whatever equipment you need to add. For some of these uses, Ford has ready-to-go solutions, such as a Snow Plow Prep Package and a High-Capacity Trailer Tow Package. Ford also works directly with a number of upfitters, and several of the more common uses for the F-550 can be ordered in turnkey form with custom graphics to go with them. Whether you opt for one of these or have something else in mind, Ford makes upfitting incredibly easy, and easy to use. The Ford Pro Upfit Integration System gives upfitters access to the F-550’s infotainment touchscreen, where custom equipment can be controlled the same way that climate controls or the radio would be. This allows for more complex systems to have more precise control, and eliminates the need for drilling holes to mount custom buttons and switches.
