2024 Ford F-150 vs. GMC Sierra 1500

You have a lot of options when shopping for a full-size pickup. There is a wide selection to choose from, and the difference between one model and another can be much more substantial than you’ll see when comparing other vehicle types. The Ford F-150 is a mainstay of this segment, with a solid reputation built on reliability and capability. But it’s certainly not the only truck in this segment, and one of the better-selling competitors is the GMC Sierra. GMC has quite a long history with pickups as well, so this should be an interesting matchup.

Ford F-150 VS GMC Sierra 1500 Highlights

The first thing that we can see in this comparison is that the F-150 gives you a lot more configuration options. Not only do you have more body configurations to choose from, but there are significantly more options when it comes to drivetrains as well. Not only that, but the F-150 is available with a hybrid or an electric drivetrain, and both of those options offer more horsepower and more torque than anything offered with the Sierra, including the diesel option. Towing capacity is pretty similar, the F-150 once again has an advantage, but chances are that not many people will make a decision based only on the difference in towing capacity. Maximum payload might be another story though. Thanks to the available regular cab and 8-foot bed combination, something not offered on the Sierra, the F-150 has the option of being outfitted to carry significantly more payload.

Ford F-150 VS GMC Sierra 1500 Performance

While the Sierra 1500 does come with a choice of four different engines, they are all pretty similar. The most horsepower available is 420 from the 6.2-liter V8, and the 3.0-liter diesel option provides the most torque, a total of 495 lb-ft. The F-150 offers twice as many drivetrain options, and there is a lot more variety among them. This is especially true when you look at the Raptor variant of the F-150, a performance version built for offroad racing for which there is no Sierra equivalent, not even close. This comes standard with a High-Output 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 that produces 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. That’s already more than anything available on the Sierra, but then there is also an available High-Output Supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that makes 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.

You don’t even have to look to the Raptor for more power than the Sierra. There is an available 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, a bit less horsepower but a lot more torque than the 6.2-liter V8 in the Sierra. Then there’s the hybrid option, which makes both more horsepower and a whole lot more torque, a total of 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. It also gets 25 mpg combined, compared to the 16 mpg combined which is the most you can get from any configuration of the Sierra involving the also less powerful 6.2-liter engine. More power and better fuel economy at the same time is certainly an appealing combination.

Ford F-150 VS GMC Sierra 1500 Interior

Both of these trucks offer spacious interiors, so space to stretch out is again unlikely to be the deciding factor in which truck you buy. But when we take a closer look, we see that both the quality and quantity of the equipment is quite different. A perfect example of this is the stereo, both trucks offer premium stereos, but they are far from comparable. The premium offering in the F-150 is the B&O® Unleashed Sound System by Bang & Olufsen®, which comes with 18 speakers, including headliner and front headrest speakers. This system is standard in a couple of trims, meaning that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get amazing sound quality. The Sierra offers a 12-speaker Bose® system, which is only standard on the top Denali Ultimate trim. In fact, this system isn’t even available as an option in any other trim, and even the Denali trim makes buyers settle for a 7-speaker version of the Bose® system. So the Denali Ultimate costs more than any trim of the F-150, but still can’t compete on stereos.

Both trucks offer things like heated front and back seats and wireless phone charging pads, but the F-150 consistently offers more equipment on comparable trims. Another good example of this is hands-free cruise control, available on the F-150 as Ford BlueCruise 1.0 and on the Sierra as Super Cruise. BlueCruise comes standard on the Limited trim of the F-150, but SuperCruise isn’t standard on any trim of the Sierra 1500, not even the Denali Ultimate, despite its costing several thousand dollars more than the F-150 Limited.

Winner - Ford F-150

While the GMC Sierra 1500 offers some decent capability in certain areas, it’s clear that the F-150 is a more advanced, more capable, and more versatile truck in every way. The F-150 offers more power, better fuel economy, more and better equipment, and a greater variety of trims than you find in the Sierra. It really isn’t at all surprising that Ford consistently several times more F-150s than GMC sells of the Sierra.
