Ford Trucks vs. Chevrolet

The Ford VS Chevrolet rivalry is among the oldest and fiercest in the automotive world. It has taken a number of forms over the years, but today it focuses primarily on pickup trucks. And unfortunately for Chevrolet, Ford knows how to build quite a truck. The Ford F-series has been the best-selling vehicle in America for decades, and for very good reason. But you don’t have to take our word for it, we’ve put together a guide to the third-party awards given out for trucks, and what these prizes say about this long-running rivalry.

Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards

Kelley Blue Book has been around for nearly a century, and has been the leading expert publication on automotive resale value since its inception. Each year, KBB names a handful of vehicles across a variety of categories deemed to be a “best buy.” Projected resale value and historic reliability are the primary criteria for this, this is Kelley Blue Book we’re talking about, but other factors are considered. For the 2023 awards, a total of four Ford models won their categories, more than any other single brand. Not all of those wins were for trucks, but the Expedition, while not a pickup, is built on a truck frame, so we’re including it on the list. Chevrolet won only one award, for the Bolt EUV, which is not a truck and is slated to be discontinued at the end of this year. These are the Ford models that won:

  • 2023 Ford Expedition
  • 2023 Ford Maverick
  • 2023 Ford F-150
  • 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

Edmunds Top Rated

Edmunds is one of the biggest names in automotive journalism, thanks to an incredibly thorough approach to reviewing and rating vehicles. The publication’s annual awards are called the Top Rated awards, and for 2023, Ford took home wins for two of the six categories. Both winners are trucks, with the F-150 taking Top Rated Truck, and the F-150 Lightning taking Top Rated Electric Truck. On top of that, the F-150 Lightning also took the Best of the Best award, where it competed against the entire US automotive market. Chevrolet again took home only one award, for the also-soon-to-be-discontinued Bolt EV.

MotorTrend Truck Of The Year

MotorTrend, and the publication’s Car of The Year award, have been around since 1949, adding a Truck of The Year award in more recent years. These are extremely difficult awards for a truck to win, since there is only one given out every year. Here though, we finally found an award that a Chevrolet truck has won, specifically the Silverado 1500 has won twice. The most recent win was in 2007 though, and obviously those two wins don’t quite measure up to the five wins that the conventional F-150 has won, most recently in 2018. We’re specifying the conventional F-150 here for those previous wins, because for 2023 it was the F-150 Lightning that won, making it the first electric truck to ever win, with a unanimous vote from the judges. MotorTrend noted that a major selling point of the Lightning is that it is the first (and still only) electric truck built to appeal to people who were already buying conventional pickups.

Winner - Ford Trucks

The results from the biggest names in the industry paint a very clear picture, Chevy trucks simply can’t compete with Ford’s Built Ford Tough lineup of trucks. These are the trucks that set the bar for the whole segment, from the best-in-class towing capacity of the Super Duty to the innovative technology of the F-150 Lightning, Ford consistently outpaces the competition.
